50 Years in the Making

1973
1973-1977

Studies

Sheikh Nuh studied philosophy and classical Arabic at the University of Chicago. His early mentors include teachers like Paul Ricoeur, the foremost scholar on hermeneutics and phenomenology.
1979
1979-1982

With the Masters

Sheikh Nuh moves to the Middle East where he reads jurisprudence (fiqh), tenets of faith (aqida), sufism (tasawwuf), prophetic teachings (hadith), and Quran recital with preeminent scholars of Islam, including Sheikh ‘Abd al-Rahman al-Shaghouri, Sheikh ‘Abd al-Wakil al-Durubi, Sheikh Nuh Ali Salman al-Qudah, Sheikh Yunus Hamdan, Sheikh Shu’ayb al-Arna’ut, and others.

1982-1991

A Seminal Translation

After 12 years of traditional study, Sheikh Nuh releases his first major translation, Reliance of the Traveller. It is the first English translation of an Islamic legal work to be certified by al-Azhar University.

Ten More Works

Sheikh Nuh continues to translate works of classical Arabic and the Islamic sciences, publishing an English translation of one of the works of the famous Imam al-Nawawi. A further 10 works are published for both Arabic and English-speaking audiences.

2005-2012

Tafsir Pt. 1

Sheikh Nuh begins a 10 year study of Quranic exegesis (tafsir) with Sheikh Ali Hani in Amman, Jordan. The pair go through each word of the Quran in light of the greatest authorities and works of the Arabic and Quranic sciences.

2012-2016

Tafsir Pt. 2

After going through an exhaustive study of the Quran (along with its commentaries) once, Sheikh Nuh decides to start from the very beginning and go through the text a second time with Sheikh Ali Hani to ensure complete accuracy.

Translating the Quran

After 15 years of studying tafsir, English poetry, grammar, and the Islamic sciences, Sheikh Nuh begins translating the Quran into English.

Indexing

A whole year is dedicated to the index of The Quran Beheld, highlighting the themes and topics that each verse of the Quran addresses. For the first time ever, readers can easily find answers to existential questions like, “how should I be as a person?”

Completion

After nearly two decades of intense study, research, writing, and review, 'The Quran Beheld' is published. The result is a translation distinguished by its precision and eloquence, setting a new standard in the field. It is testament to thousands of hours immersed in both Arabic and Western literary traditions.
